Early Career
Born in Ukraine, Yevhen Levchenko began his football journey with Donetsk's youth system. At a young age, he moved to Moscow CSKA before joining Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem at the age of 17.
Vitesse Arnhem
Although Vitesse was a competitive team in the Eredivisie, breaking into the starting lineup proved challenging for Levchenko. He was initially loaned out to Helmond and Cambuur before returning to Vitesse. Despite his efforts, injuries and competition limited his playing time, and he made only a few sporadic appearances.
The Rotterdam Years
In 2004, Levchenko left Vitesse for Sparta Rotterdam in the second division. The move proved fruitful, as he became a regular starter and helped Sparta fight for promotion. His consistent performances caught the attention of FC Groningen, and he signed for the club in 2005.
FC Groningen
At Groningen, Levchenko immediately established himself as a key player. Manager Ron Jans praised his versatility and ability to control the game. In the 2006/07 season, he took on penalty-taking duties and set a personal best of 8 goals. He also played a vital role in Groningen's qualification for the UEFA Cup.
International Career
Despite his limited playing time at Vitesse, Levchenko earned sporadic caps for the Ukrainian national team. He eventually obtained a Dutch passport but continued to play for Ukraine. His performances in the Eredivisie drew attention from Russian journalists, who were surprised to learn of his Ukrainian nationality.
