Early Life and Education
Yevhen Tkachenko was born on January 21, 1923, in the village of Monastyrische, Ukraine. His father was a military officer, and his mother was a teacher. Due to his father's military service, the family moved frequently, and Yevhen attended different schools throughout Ukraine. In 1941, he completed his secondary education in Cherkasy.
Military Service and Imprisonment
In October 1937, Yevhen's father was arrested. He was posthumously exonerated in 1960. During World War II, Yevhen served in the 2nd Ukrainian Front. He was severely wounded in the head during the Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi Offensive (1944) and was demobilized.
Artistic Development
After the war, Yevhen enrolled at the Cherkasy Pedagogical Institute, majoring in Russian language and literature. He also studied painting in a studio and took on teaching jobs. In 1949, he entered the Odessa Art College, where he was influenced by renowned artists such as Kiriak Kostandi, Gennady Ladyzhensky, and Alexei Shovkunenko.
Professional Career
In 1954, Yevhen Tkachenko graduated from the Art College and joined the Union of Artists in Cherkasy. He created decorative panels and, from 1954, lived and worked in Cherkasy. In the late 1950s, he spent significant time in Kyiv, where he painted a series dedicated to the city's post-war revival.
From 1961 onwards, he participated in numerous art exhibitions and gained recognition. The late 1960s marked a turning point in his work as he developed his unique style. In 1972, he held his first solo exhibition.
Artistic Style and Recognition
Yevhen Tkachenko's paintings are characterized by their impressionistic colors and subtle depiction of the era of the 1950s and 1970s. He often painted portraits, landscapes, genre scenes, and still-life compositions. From 1979, he participated in the "Sedniv Open Air Painting" events, where he discovered the vibrant landscapes of the Chernihiv region.
Tkachenko's works are held in prestigious museums, galleries, and private collections throughout Ukraine and internationally, including Moldova, Russia, Poland, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Legacy
Yevhen Tkachenko passed away on August 26, 2002, in Cherkasy. He left behind a rich artistic legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences. His paintings offer a unique window into the cultural and historical landscape of Ukraine during the post-war era.
