John Armleder: Artist, Critic, Curator

Early Life and Artistic Background

John Armleder was born in 1948 and attended the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva from 1966-1967. He furthered his studies at the Glamorgan Summer School in the United Kingdom in 1969.

Fluxus and the Groupe Ecart

Armleder became actively involved in the Fluxus movement during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1969, he co-founded the Groupe Ecart, an artist collective known for its performances and publications.

Contextualizing Art

Armleder's work often examines the context in which art is displayed and experienced. In his early installations, he challenged the notion of artistic authenticity by juxtaposing found objects with abstract paintings that ironically referenced modernism.

Furniture Sculptures

From the 1990s onward, Armleder created his signature "Furniture Sculptures." These installations combine furniture with monochromatic or abstract paintings executed directly on the furniture or on canvases attached to it.

Method and Presentation

Armleder's artistic practice is characterized by spontaneity and chance. Inspired by John Cage's approach, he often employs a "scenographic" method, placing disparate works in close proximity, creating exhibition spaces that resemble installations.

Affiliations and Recognition

John Armleder was a member of the Geneva-based Groupe Luc Bois. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous public and private collections. He has received critical acclaim for his innovative contributions to contemporary art.
