Charlotte Berend-Corinth: German Artist and Memoirist

Charlotte Berend-Corinth was a German artist and memoirist, as well as the wife and model of Lovis Corinth. She studied at the Berlin Museum of Applied Arts and later at Lovis Corinth's private school. In 1903, she married Corinth and gave birth to their son and daughter.

Work with the Berlin Secession

From 1906, Charlotte began exhibiting her works alongside the Berlin Secession, and in 1912, she became a member of the group. She gained recognition as a portraitist, with one of her notable works being a portrait of the actor Werner Kraus. Additionally, she worked as a book artist and illustrator, including illustrating the works of Valeska Gert.

Emigration to the United States

In 1933, Charlotte emigrated to the United States with her children. She continued to pursue her artistic career and in 1958, she published a complete collection of Lovis Corinth's works, which remains a fundamental edition of his works to this day. Her memoirs provide valuable insights into the life and art of Lovis Corinth.

Overall, Charlotte Berend-Corinth made significant contributions to the art world as both an artist and memoirist. Her involvement with the Berlin Secession and her role as Lovis Corinth's wife and muse contributed to her recognition as an important figure in German art history. Her emigration to the United States and her dedication to preserving and sharing Lovis Corinth's works further solidify her place in the art world.
