Galician-Russian Writer: Mykhailo Zgharsky
Early Life and EducationMykhailo Zgharsky was the son of a priest. He received his education at the University of Lviv and the University of Vienna. Following his studies, he became a Russian language teacher at a gymnasium.
Literary Career
Zgharsky's literary journey began in 1854 with the publication of his poem "Buvay zdorov" in the Galician newspaper "Zorya." In 1862, he released two poems: "Svyaty Vechir" (Holy Evening) and "Marusya Bohuslavka." These works drew inspiration from folk beliefs and songs.
Journalism and Folklore
Throughout his career, Zgharsky contributed articles to the newspaper "Pravda." Notably, he wrote "On Folk Philosophy in Proverbs" (1867) and "On Surviving Paganism in Songs, Tales, and Proverbs" (1868). Additionally, he published the humorous story "Father Yuri."
Publications and Research
In 1877, Zgharsky published a collection of his poems. He dedicated significant effort to researching Galician folklore and history. His notable works in this area, published through the Mykhailo Kachkovsky Society, include:
