Childhood and Early Life
Evgenia Volodina was born on September 17, 1984, in Kazan, Russia. She grew up in a large and loving family, surrounded by her parents, grandparents, sisters, and brother. The Volodin family was considered well-to-do, and the children lacked nothing.
Modeling Beginnings
Volodina initially entered a modeling studio as a companion to a friend. She attended classes for teenagers at the "Lik" fashion theater. While she initially abandoned modeling, she later resumed her studies in 2000. These classes included various subjects such as style, makeup, psychology, acting, catwalk, and choreography. Volodina approached these lessons more as a hobby than a serious pursuit.
Breakthrough in Paris
After completing high school, Volodina faced the decision of choosing a profession. Like many Russian graduates, she planned to attend university. However, she also participated in the "Miss Reklama" contest. Coincidentally, the contest was attended by Moscow photographer Alexei Vasiliev, who had previously discovered Natalia Vodianova in Nizhny Novgorod. Vasiliev took several photographs of Volodina and sent them to the "Viva" agency in Paris. A few months later, Vasiliev contacted Volodina in Kazan, informing her that she was invited to Paris.
International Success
Despite the uncertainties of leaving home, Volodina chose to pursue this opportunity in Paris. She arrived in the city of her dreams and quickly began to make a name for herself. Volodina's first year in Paris was challenging, as she lived in modest conditions and faced language barriers. She also missed her family dearly.
Volodina's fortunes changed after renowned photographer Steven Meisel discovered her. Meisel had her shoot for the cover of Italian "Vogue" in 2002, giving her the nickname "Zhenya Zhenial" (Zhenya the Genius). This shoot launched Volodina's career and led to her invitation to participate in fashion weeks for renowned brands such as Balmain, Christian Dior, Givenchy, and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Gucci Campaign and Rise to Stardom
In the same year, Volodina became the face of Gucci alongside Natalia Vodianova. Her striking appearance and unique style perfectly embodied the new Gucci image created by Tom Ford. The campaign, photographed by Mario Testino, portrayed Volodina as a both elegant and rebellious figure, capturing the essence of a modern femme fatale.
Dior J'adore Controversy
Despite her successes, Volodina faced a setback in 2003 when she was initially chosen as the new face of Christian Dior's fragrance "J'adore." However, plans changed at the last moment, and the company opted to renew its contract with Carmen Kass. This disappointment did not deter Volodina, who went on to represent other prestigious fragrance brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Valentino.
Later Career and Legacy
In subsequent years, Volodina graced the covers of countless fashion magazines and walked the runways for over 1500 shows. Her omnipresence in the modeling world made her an iconic figure. However, despite her international fame, she remained grounded and close to her family in Russia.
Volodina's inner qualities of dignity and self-respect are considered as important as her physical beauty. She represents a generation of Russian models who have showcased the enigmatic and alluring spirit of their homeland.
