Ewa Kopacz: A Political Trailblazer in Poland
Ewa Kopacz (née Lis) is a seasoned Polish politician who served as the 54th Prime Minister of Poland from September 22, 2014, to November 16, 2015. Before that, she held the position of Marshal of the Sejm, Poland's lower house of parliament, from 2011 to 2014.
Early Life and Education
Born on December 3, 1956, in Radom, Poland, Kopacz spent her childhood in the city where she received her secondary education. In 1981, she graduated from the Medical University of Lublin with a degree in pediatrics.
Political Career
Kopacz's political career began in the late 1990s when she joined the Freedom Union. In 2001, she became a member of the Civic Platform party, and in 2013, she was appointed as the party's first vice-chair.
Elected to the Sejm four times from 2001 onwards, Kopacz served as Minister of Health from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, she was elected to the leadership of the Sejm. In 2015, she led the Civic Platform's electoral campaign.
Prime Ministership
Ewa Kopacz became Prime Minister of Poland in the wake of Donald Tusk's election as President of the European Council. During her term, she focused on economic development, healthcare reforms, and social welfare programs. Notably, she introduced a minimum wage increase and expanded access to healthcare services.
Personal Life
Kopacz was married to prosecutor Marek Kopacz until their divorce in 2008. Together, they had a daughter, Katarzyna, born in 1984.
