Gila Gamliel: A Trailblazer in Israeli Politics
Born into a Sephardi (Mizrahi) family with Yemeni and Libyan Jewish heritage, Gila Gamliel is a prominent Israeli politician known for her advocacy for social justice.
Early Life and Education
Growing up with five brothers in the city of Gedera, Gamliel earned a Bachelor's degree in Middle Eastern History and Philosophy and a Master's degree in Philosophy from Ben-Gurion University. She also served as student union chair and became the first female Chairperson of the National Student Association. Later, she obtained a Bachelor's degree from the Academic College. Fluent in Hebrew, English, and Arabic, Gamliel's educational background laid the foundation for her successful political career.
Political Journey
Gamliel first ran for the Knesset (Israeli parliament) in 1999 but did not secure a seat. However, in 2003, she made a remarkable comeback, winning an 11th-place position on the Likud party list. Despite facing corruption allegations that were later dismissed, Gamliel became a member of the Knesset. She served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and headed the Committee on the Status of Women. Additionally, she opposed the "Roadmap" plan for peace in 2003.
Return to Knesset and Ministerial Appointments
After a brief absence from the Knesset, Gamliel was re-elected in 2009 and became Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. In 2013, she retained her deputy ministerial position but lost her Knesset seat. Nevertheless, she returned to the Knesset in 2015 and was appointed Minister of Senior Citizens and Gender Equality in the new government.

As Minister of Senior Citizens and Gender Equality, Gamliel has focused on improving the lives of older adults and advancing gender equality in Israel. Her advocacy for social justice, particularly for marginalized communities, has been instrumental in shaping Israeli society.
