Fagner: The Resilient Defender
Early Career in BrazilFagner began his professional career at the tender age of 17 with Corinthians. He made his Brazilian Serie A debut against Fortaleza and went on loan to Vitória in 2007 to gain playing experience. After the South American Youth Championship, Fagner transferred to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
A Brief Stint in the Netherlands
On August 25, Fagner scored his first goal in the Eredivisie against NEC. However, due to fierce competition, he saw limited playing time, featuring in only three league matches. Despite this, he played a part in PSV's league title and domestic cup victories.
Return to Brazil and Success
In 2009, Fagner returned to his homeland, signing with Vasco da Gama. He scored his first goal for the club against Bahia on October 24 and helped them secure promotion to the top flight by winning the Serie B title. In 2011, Fagner played a pivotal role in Vasco's Copa do Brasil triumph and was named to the tournament's Best XI.
A Move to Germany and a Return Home
In 2012, Fagner transferred to Wolfsburg for €3 million. He made his Bundesliga debut against Stuttgart on August 25. After a season, Fagner expressed a desire to return to Brazil and was loaned back to Vasco da Gama in 2013 and Corinthians in 2014.
International Breakthrough
In 2007, Fagner was part of the Brazil U20 team that won the South American Youth Championship. He made his senior international debut in 2017 in a friendly against Colombia. In 2015, Fagner scored his first goal for Brazil in a Copa Libertadores match against Once Caldas. He helped Corinthians win the league championship the same year.
