Early Life and Education
Talgat Musabayev was born on August 24, 1964, in Uzgen, Kyrgyzstan. He graduated from the aviation school in 1987, where he worked as a flight instructor accumulating approximately 950 flight hours in various aircraft.
Cosmonaut Training and Selection
In 1990, Musabayev was selected to join the Soviet cosmonaut group (1990 Air Force Group No. 10). During his training, he completed the full course for Soyuz TM series spacecraft and the Mir orbital station as a spacecraft commander.
Space Shuttle Mission
In 1997, Musabayev arrived in the United States to prepare for a flight aboard the American reusable spaceship Space Shuttle. From January 23-31, 1998, he participated in the Space Shuttle Endeavour mission (STS-89) as a mission specialist. The eight-day, 19-hour, 46-minute, and 54-second mission involved docking with the Russian orbital complex Mir.
Honors and Recognition
Musabayev's accomplishments earned him the title of Hero of Russia and other prestigious government awards from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. He continued his training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center and served as the commander of backup crews for missions Soyuz TM-29 and Soyuz TM-30.
Personal Life
Musabayev is married and has a son and a daughter. He enjoys football and reading.
