Fan S. Noli: Albanian Religious and Political Leader

Early Life and Education

Theofan Stilian Noli, known as Fan S. Noli, was born on January 6, 1882, in Thrace. He was a polyglot, speaking 13 foreign languages. Noli traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean region during his youth, living for extended periods in Greece and Egypt. He supported himself as an actor and translator, and developed a strong connection to the Albanian diaspora.

Involvement in Albanian Nationalism

In 1906, Noli moved to Boston, where he became an ardent supporter of the Albanian national movement. As the Orthodox Church in Albania was heavily influenced by Greece and resisted the national liberation cause, Noli and a group of Albanian nationalists established an independent Albanian Orthodox Church in 1908. Noli was ordained as a bishop in the newly formed church.

Harvard Education and Return to Europe

Noli pursued his education at Harvard University, graduating in 1912. He returned to Europe to fight for Albanian independence, and first visited Albania in 1913. During World War I, he returned to the US and led the Albanian diaspora. Through his diplomatic efforts, President Woodrow Wilson supported international recognition of Albania's independence, which was proclaimed in 1912 and recognized by the League of Nations in 1920.

Political Career in Albania

In 1921, Noli was elected to the Albanian parliament as a member of the liberal party "Vatra." He briefly served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Xhafer Ypi. Following the assassination of liberal politician Avni Rustemi by conservatives, Noli delivered a fiery speech at his funeral, which sparked an uprising and the flight of conservative Prime Minister A. Zogu.

Prime Ministership and Exile

Noli briefly served as Prime Minister and Regent of Albania from July 17, 1924. Despite his efforts to reform the country, his "Program of 12 Points" proved unpopular. On December 25, 1924, his government was overthrown in a coup led by supporters of A. Zogu. Two weeks later, Zogu returned to Albania and Noli fled to Italy, where he was sentenced to death in absentia.

Later Life in the US

In 1932, Noli relocated to the US and established a Republican opposition to Zogu's regime, who had since proclaimed himself King. He pursued further education, specializing in Byzantine music, and played an active role in the Albanian Orthodox Church. In exile, Noli established contacts with Enver Hoxha's regime in Albania after World War II and persuaded the American government to recognize the new regime. He passed away in Florida in 1965.
