Maximiliano Faotto: A Uruguayan in Italy
Maximiliano Faotto, a Uruguayan footballer and defender, opted for Italian citizenship while playing in Italy. As an oriundi, he was the son of Italian parents who emigrated to South America in pursuit of a better life.
Early Life and Career
Faotto's childhood was spent in his hometown of Montevideo, where he began his career with the club Nacional. In 1931, he moved to another capital team, Racing, where he remained for a year and a half. Like many South American footballers of the early 1930s, Faotto left for Italy to pursue professional opportunities.
Serie A Debut with Palermo
In Italy, Faotto joined the Serie A club Palermo, making his debut on December 11, 1932, against Bari. He played for Palermo for five seasons, including the season in which the club was relegated to Serie B. Despite the club's struggles, Faotto remained loyal, attempting to help them regain their Serie A status.
Move to Lazio
After Palermo's unsuccessful bid for promotion, Faotto joined Lazio in Rome. However, he faced competition for a starting spot, alternating between appearances and bench time. During the 1940-1941 season, he was loaned to Napoli, where he became a leading defender.
Later Career
Upon his return to Lazio, Faotto played sparingly before departing for Serie C club Ascoli. After the war, he returned to Palermo, serving as the club's player-manager for two seasons.
