Early Life and Education
Fatima Sattarova was born in Baku in 1922. She enrolled in the Medical Technical School in 1937, where she aspired to become a nurse while dreaming of a family and career. Upon graduating in January 1941, she married and obtained a military diploma and identification card from the school's military department.
World War II
When Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, Sattarova, as a military conscript, immediately volunteered for service. Determined to defend her homeland, she served as a nurse at the age of 18. Her husband worked in a munitions factory, which supported the war effort.
Sattarova participated in the Battle of Moscow in 1941-1942, where she witnessed the horrors of war and the sacrifices made by Soviet soldiers. Despite encountering air raids and tank attacks, she escaped with her life.
Advancing with the Red Army towards Leningrad, Sattarova endured the city's siege. She witnessed the horrors of the "Road of Life," where civilians struggled for food, medicine, and transport across Lake Ladoga.
After the siege was lifted, Sattarova evacuated wounded soldiers from Leningrad and served in various hospitals along the Stalinist front. She advanced with the army until she fell ill in Hungary in February 1945. She was discharged from service and returned to Baku three months before the Soviet victory.
Postwar Life
Postwar, Sattarova pursued a new career, earning a degree in economics from Baku State University. She became a mother to four children and later had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sattarova remained active in public life, working in senior positions and now participating in veterans' organizations. She became the first female chairman of the Organization of War, Labor, and Armed Forces Veterans of Azerbaijan in 2021.
As a war veteran and intellectual, Sattarova contributed to the cultural and political life of Azerbaijan. She was an active voice in international events related to World War II.
Death
Fatima Sattarova passed away on September 14, 2024, at the age of 102.
