Early Life and Family
Gebhard I, also known as Gebhard of Lahngau, was born around 838. He was the son of Odo II, Count of Lower Lahngau, and his father's identity remains uncertain. Some historians believe he was the same person as Odo the Elder, mentioned in records from 821-826. His mother was related to the Robertians and Carolingians.
Political Career
Gebhard I is first mentioned in documents dating from 838 to 879. In 838, he supported Emperor Louis the Pious against his son Louis the German, alongside Count Poppo I of Grapfeld and Archbishop Otgar of Mainz. Later, his sons became involved in conflicts between Carolingian kings, siding with the rulers of the West Frankish Kingdom. This led to their exile in 861, but they were able to return after the death of Louis the German.
Late Years and Death
Gebhard I died in 879. Before his death, he took monastic vows at Gemünden. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Odo.

Gebhard I married an unknown woman, who was the sister of Ernst, Margrave of Bavarian Nordgau. Their children included:
