Biography of Fedor Babichev

Fedor Semenovich Babichev was a Soviet Ukrainian scientist and specialist in the field of organic chemistry, particularly organic synthesis and heterocyclic compound chemistry. He was born on February 28, 1917, in the village of Bobrikovo, now part of the Antratsytivskyi District in the Luhansk Oblast, in a peasant family.

Babichev completed his secondary education with honors in the city of Rovenky in 1936. In 1944, he graduated from the chemical faculty of the Taras Shevchenko Kiev State University (KNU).

From 1945 to 1948, Babichev worked as a research assistant at the chemical faculty of KNU. He then became an assistant at the same faculty from 1948 to 1950.

Babichev continued his academic career as an associate professor of organic chemistry at KNU from 1950 to 1967. In 1967, he became a professor of organic chemistry at KNU.

From 1968 to 1978, Babichev served as the dean of the chemical faculty at KNU. During this time, he also became the head of the department of organic chemistry from 1971 to 1986.

Babichev received several prestigious awards and honors throughout his career. In 1971, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. In 1972, he became a corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (AN USRR), and in 1973, he was elected as an academician of AN USRR. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin in 1976 and the Order of the October Revolution in 1987.

In addition to his academic and research achievements, Babichev was also actively involved in the scientific community. He served as the vice-president of AN USRR from 1978 to 1988 and was a member of the Verkhovna Rada (Supreme Council) of the Ukrainian SSR. Babichev was known for his work on the synthesis and reactivity of heterocyclic compounds, and his research contributed to the development of the field of organic chemistry in the Soviet Union.

Fedor Babichev passed away on April 28, 2000, in Kiev. He was a renowned scientist, a dedicated educator, and a respected member of the scientific community in Ukraine. His contributions to the field of organic chemistry continue to be recognized and valued.
