Biography of Fedor Pakhalchuk

Fedor Pakhalchuk was a Soviet military leader, a Hero of the Soviet Union (1944), a Rear Admiral, and an honorary citizen of Odessa. He was born on November 16, 1916, in the village of Dvorik, which is now part of the Krasylivsky district in the Khmelnytskyi region of Ukraine.

Early Life and Education

In 1935, Pakhalchuk completed his studies at the vocational factory school affiliated with the Industrial Institute in Odessa. He then enrolled in the Kiev Industrial Institute. In 1937, he began his training at the M.V. Frunze Naval School in Leningrad, following a call from the Komsomol.

Participation in Wars

During the Soviet-Finnish War from 1939 to 1940, Pakhalchuk actively participated. From 1941 to 1945, he served as the commander of the 2nd division of minesweeping boats in the 4th Brigade of Minesweeping of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. Throughout more than 250 operations, including minesweeping, amphibious landings, submarine escorts, and convoys, he destroyed over 48,000 sea mines, 11 enemy ships, and 3 airplanes.

Hero of the Soviet Union

In 1944, Pakhalchuk was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on July 22. In 1952, he completed the command faculty at the K.E. Voroshilov Naval Academy.

Later Career

Following his graduation, Pakhalchuk served in Port Arthur and commanded a fleet unit of the Pacific Fleet. In 1955, he was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Black Sea Water Area Defense Division and later commanded a ship brigade. In 1960, he became the commander of the ship brigade for the defense of the Black Sea Water Area in Odessa. In 1965, he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and became the commander of the Poti Naval Base on the Black Sea.

Retirement and Legacy

Pakhalchuk retired in 1972. For 31 years, he served as the Chairman of the Council of Veterans of the Antarctic Fishing Industry in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. He received numerous honors and awards, including the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Nakhimov 2nd Class, four Orders of the Red Star, two Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, and various other medals.

Pakhalchuk was also awarded the Order of Elizabeth, which was presented to him by the Queen of England in 1944. He received two Orders of Friendship from China and the Czechoslovak Order of the Red Star, along with the "Golden Star" medal.

Fedor Pakhalchuk is remembered as a distinguished military leader and a true hero of the Soviet Union.
