Biography of Feliciano Lopez

Born into a family of tennis coaches, Feliciano Lopez began playing tennis at the age of five. In 1997, he reached the final of the Orange Bowl tournament in the under-16 age category. Later that year, he made his professional debut in a challenger tournament in Mallorca.

In 1999, Lopez was a finalist in the European Junior Championships in the under-18 age group and also won his first ITF Futures tournaments in singles and doubles.

In 2001, he reached his first career final in a challenger tournament in singles, and also reached the final in doubles in an ATP tournament and two challengers, all with his compatriot Francisco Roig.

In 2002, Lopez made a breakthrough by reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon, where he defeated two seeded opponents and entered the top 100 rankings for the first time. Later that year, he defeated the fourth-ranked player in the world, Marat Safin, in Hong Kong and finished the season ranked 62nd in singles.

In 2003, Lopez became the champion of Spain by defeating Rafael Nadal in the final and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon again. He also made his debut in the Davis Cup for Spain in doubles.

In 2004, Lopez played one match for the national team in the Davis Cup, winning against Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic. Spain went on to win the Davis Cup that year. In singles, Lopez reached his first ATP final in Dubai, where he lost to world number one Roger Federer. He also reached the fourth round of the French Open and the third round of the Olympic Games in Athens. He ended the season ranked among the top 30 players in the world. In doubles, he reached the quarterfinals of the US Open with Fernando Verdasco and won his first ATP title in Stockholm.

By the end of January 2005, Lopez reached a career-high ranking of 20th in singles. In that year, he reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament again, this time at Wimbledon. He defeated the fifth-seeded Safin along the way, becoming the first Spanish player to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since Manuel Orantes in 1992.

In the following years, Lopez continued to have success on the ATP tour, defeating top-ranked players including Ivan Ljubicic, Tomas Berdych, and David Ferrer. He also had a successful Davis Cup campaign in 2008, winning five out of seven matches, including two in the finals against Argentina.

In 2009, Lopez won his third Davis Cup title with the Spanish team and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in doubles with Verdasco for the fifth time in his career.

In the early part of 2010, Lopez won his second ATP singles title in Johannesburg.

Throughout his career, Feliciano Lopez has been known for his strong serve and aggressive playing style. He continues to compete at a high level and is considered one of Spain's most successful tennis players.
