Jean-Baptiste Guimet

French artist Jean-Baptiste Guimet was born in the town of Lyon, France.

Early Training

Guimet began his artistic education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon under the tutelage of Jean Claude Bonfon. In 1848, he moved to Paris to study at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he trained under Michel Martin Drolling and François Édouard Picot.

Rome and Egypt

In 1856, Guimet was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, which enabled him to spend several years in Rome studying and creating art. He later traveled to Egypt, where he decorated the palace of a prince with erotic and hunting scenes. However, when the prince failed to pay him in full, Guimet took his most famous work, "Circassienne Au Harem," back to France with him.

Return to France

In 1868, Guimet returned to France. In 1872, he was commissioned by the French government to copy the works of Andrea Mantegna in Padua, Italy. From 1874 to 1877, he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon before retiring.

Later Career

Guimet participated in several major exhibitions, including the World's Fairs in London (1872), Vienna (1873), and Paris (1878). It is believed that the influential primitive artist Henri Rousseau received guidance and support from Guimet, who allowed him to make copies of paintings in the Louvre. This privilege was typically reserved for students of academic institutions.
