Early Life and Education

Roger Dean was born in Ashford, Kent, England, on August 31, 1944. His father was a British Army officer, so Dean spent much of his childhood traveling the world with his family. They eventually returned to England in 1959, where Dean attended Norton Knatchbull School.

Artistic Beginnings

After graduating from Norton Knatchbull, Dean pursued a design degree at the Canterbury College of Art. In 1968, he completed his studies at the Royal College of Art in London.

Breakthrough in Album Cover Art

Dean's career took a significant turn in the late 1960s when he began creating album covers for rock bands. His imaginative and surrealist designs quickly gained recognition, and he soon became one of the most sought-after album cover designers of the time.

Life in Brighton

In 1972, Dean relocated to Brighton, East Sussex, where he established his home and studio. From Brighton, he continued to produce iconic album covers for bands such as Yes, Asia, and Uriah Heep, among others.

Architectural and Literary Pursuits

In addition to his work as an album cover designer, Dean also pursued interests in architecture and literature. He designed several buildings, including the Yes Planetarium in Bristol and the Brighton Marina. He also published several books, including "Views" (1975), "Magnetic Storm" (1984), and "The World of Roger Dean" (2005).
