Felix Gottwald: A Legendary Austrian Nordic Combined Skier
Olympic TriumphsFelix Gottwald is a renowned Austrian Nordic combined skier who holds the record for the most Olympic medals (6) in the sport's history. He debuted at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics at the age of 18 and competed in four consecutive Olympic Games.
Gottwald's first Olympic podium came in 2002 at Salt Lake City, where he won bronze in all three Nordic combined events: the 7.5 km sprint, 15 km individual, and 4x5 km relay. His greatest triumph came four years later in Turin, where the 30-year-old became a double Olympic champion in the sprint and relay and won silver in the individual event, finishing behind only Germany's Georg Hettich. For the past two Olympics, Gottwald had earned a medal in every single race he competed in.
World Championship Accolades
Gottwald's first World Championship medal was a bronze in the 1997 relay in Trondheim. At the 2001 Lahti Championships, he won silver in the relay and bronze in the individual event. In 2003, he achieved his maiden World Championship title in the relay at Val di Fiemme, Italy. He added a silver in the individual event and a bronze in the sprint to his collection.
In 2005 in Oberstdorf, Gottwald further extended his medal tally with two more bronzes in the individual event and relay. Over nine years (1997-2006), he accumulated 14 medals at World Championships and Olympics: 3 gold, 3 silver, and 8 bronze. Notably, 8 of these 14 medals were won in individual races.
World Cup Success
Gottwald made his World Cup debut in 1993 at the age of 17. In 1997/98, he finished third in the overall standings. He claimed his first stage victory in Kuopio, Finland on December 2, 2000, in the sprint event, followed by a win in the individual event the next day. In that 2000/01 season, Gottwald won four more stages and secured the overall World Cup title.
Over the next two seasons, the Austrian finished second behind Germany's Ronny Ackermann in the overall standings. In 2004/05, Gottwald placed third in the World Cup. Apart from Gottwald, only one other Austrian, Klaus Sulzenbacher (1987/88 and 1989/90), has ever won the overall World Cup.
Throughout his career, Gottwald achieved 20 stage wins in the World Cup: 6 in individual events, 11 in sprints, and 3 in mass starts. His total stage victories rank him fourth in World Cup history.
Retirement and Return
Gottwald retired from competitive skiing after the 2006/07 season. In May 2009, the 33-year-old announced his intention to return to the sport to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Gottwald had worked as a commentator for an Austrian television network before his comeback.
