Biography of Lyudmila Kravets

Lyudmila Stepanovna Kravets was born on February 7, 1923, in the village of Kushugum (now a settlement of the city type) in the Zaporizhia region of Ukraine. She came from a family of civil servants.

Early Life

In 1941, Lyudmila Kravets graduated from the Zaporizhia School of Medical Nurses. As soon as the Great Patriotic War broke out, she started working in evacuation hospitals. She joined the Soviet Army in July 1941.

Military Service

In 1942, the military unit where Lyudmila Kravets served entered combat on the Northwestern Front. She was severely wounded in one of the battles but returned to her unit after recovering in the hospital. On April 17, 1945, during the fighting near Berlin, she replaced the injured platoon commander and, by personal example, inspired the soldiers to fulfill their combat tasks. She participated in street battles in Berlin and evacuated the wounded from the battlefield under enemy fire.

Hero of the Soviet Union

Lyudmila Stepanovna Kravets was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 31, 1945. She received the Order of Lenin and the "Golden Star" medal.

Post-War Life

After the war, Lyudmila Kravets lived in her hometown of Zaporizhia and later in Kyiv. She actively worked on military-patriotic education of the youth.

Awards

Lyudmila Kravets was decorated with the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, 3 Orders of the Red Star, and several medals.
