Ferdinand von Arnim: Architect and Watercolorist

Ferdinand von Arnim was a renowned architect and watercolorist who left his mark on the architectural landscape of Berlin and Potsdam.

Architectural Education and Career

Born into a Prussian noble family, Arnim studied architecture at the Royal Architectural School from 1833 to 1838. He joined the Berlin Union of Architects in 1839 and worked under Ludwig Persius on various construction projects. In 1844, he became a building inspector and was appointed architect to the Royal Prussian Palace Construction Commission in 1845.

Royal Service and Teaching

Arnim also served as architect to Prince Charles of Prussia, the third son of Frederick William III. In 1846, he began teaching at the Berlin Architectural Academy, becoming a professor in 1857. He received the title of Court Architect in 1848.

Architectural Contributions

Arnim played a significant role in the design and construction of notable buildings in Berlin and Potsdam. He participated in the creation of the Muskau Park for Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau from 1855 to 1863.

Legacy

Ferdinand von Arnim died in 1866 and was buried in the Bornstedt Cemetery in Potsdam, near the grave of his mentor, Ludwig Persius. His architectural legacy continues to be admired for its elegance, precision, and attention to detail.
