Willem van de Velde the Elder
Willem van de Velde the Elder was a renowned Dutch marine artist, belonging to the illustrious van de Velde dynasty of painters. His brother Esaias, cousin Jan II, nephew (Esaias's son) Antony, and Jan III (Jan II's son) were all accomplished artists.
Early Life and Naval Service
Willem van de Velde was born into a family steeped in artistic heritage. In his youth, he served in the Dutch navy, where he honed his skills as a draftsman, specializing in depicting ships and naval battles. His exceptional talent eventually earned him the prestigious role of official artist for the Dutch fleet.
Marriage and Children
In 1631, Willem van de Velde married Judith van Leyven, with whom he had two sons, Willem and Adrian, who would both become renowned artists in their own right.
English Service
In 1672, during the Anglo-Dutch War, Willem van de Velde entered the service of English King Charles II, accompanied by his eldest son, Willem van de Velde the Younger. This move marked a significant chapter in his career, as he became a crucial figure in the British maritime art scene.
