Early Life and Education
Marie-Louis-Joseph Langle de Cary was born on April 16, 1848, in Nancy, France. He graduated from the prestigious Saint-Cyr Military School in 1869 and later attended the General Staff Academy.
Military Career
During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), Langle de Cary served as a cavalry officer. He commanded a cavalry brigade and later a colonial division. In 1908, he became commander of an army corps and in 1912, joined the Superior War Council.
World War I
At the outbreak of World War I, Langle de Cary was appointed commander of the 4th Army. During the border battles in the Ardennes, his army suffered a defeat, forcing it to retreat on August 22, 1914. However, in the Battle of the Marne, the 4th Army managed to hold its positions. Langle de Cary's troops also participated in the Champagne offensive in 1915.
In late 1915, Langle de Cary was appointed commander of a group of armies, including those defending the fortress of Verdun. In 1916, he was removed from command and sent on a diplomatic mission to Algeria and Tunisia.
Retirement and Death
Langle de Cary retired from active duty in 1917. He passed away on December 12, 1927, at the age of 79.
