Biography of Fernando Filoni

Early Life and Education

Fernando Filoni was born on April 15, 1946 in Taranto, Italy. He entered the seminary and obtained a doctorate in philosophy and canon law. Filoni was ordained as a priest on July 3, 1970.

Early Diplomatic Career

He served in nunciatures in Sri Lanka from 1982 to 1983, Iran from 1983 to 1985, Brazil from 1989 to 1992, and finally in the Philippines from 1992 to 2001. Although formally appointed as the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, he was based in Hong Kong during this time.

Work in the Vatican

During his time in the Philippines, Monsignor Filoni played a crucial role in bridging the gap between the Pope and the Chinese bishops, official and unofficial Churches, and bishops, fostering reconciliation with the Holy See. On January 17, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed Filoni as the Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq and Jordan, and he was consecrated as the titular Archbishop of Volturnum on March 19, 2001.

Defending Freedom and Peace

As the Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq, Filoni defended the freedom of the Roman Catholic Church under Saddam Hussein's regime and opposed the American invasion of Iraq, aligning with the position of Pope John Paul II. He remained in Baghdad during the bombings, refusing to leave the capital, stating that "It was nothing extraordinary." After the fall of Saddam, he acknowledged the challenges faced by the newly liberated people, warned of security risks and slow economic development, supported the new constitution, and advocated for peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims.

Assassination Attempt and Return to the Philippines

Filoni narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Baghdad on February 1, 2006, when a car bomb exploded near the nunciature. He continued to serve in Iraq and Jordan until February 25, 2006, when he returned to the Philippines as the nuncio.

Deputy Secretary of State of the Holy See

On June 9, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the Deputy Secretary of State of the Holy See for General Affairs, and Filoni officially assumed his position on July 1. In this role, he organizes the activities of the Roman Curia and appointments to curial departments, maintains the level of papal documents, handles the interests of embassies to the Holy See, and issues official communications.

Future Prospects
