Early Life and Episcopal Career
Fernando Vérgez Alzaga was appointed Titular Bishop of Villamagna in Proconsulari on October 15, 2011. Subsequently, on August 30, 2013, he assumed the role of General Secretary of the Governorate of Vatican City State, serving in this capacity until October 1, 2021. During his tenure as Titular Bishop, he was elevated to the rank of Titular Archbishop on September 8, 2021.
Chairman and Governor of the Vatican City State
On October 1, 2021, Archbishop Vérgez Alzaga was appointed Chairman of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and Governor of Vatican City State. He became a Spanish curial cardinal and a member of the congregation of the Legionaries of Christ.
Elevation to Cardinal
On May 29, 2022, Pope Francis announced that 21 prelates, including Archbishop Vérgez Alzaga, would be elevated to the rank of Cardinal at a consistory held on August 27, 2022.

On August 27, 2022, the consistory took place, during which Fernando Vérgez Alzaga was granted the cardinal's hat, the cardinal's ring, and the titular diaconate of Santa Maria della Mercede e Sant'Adriano a Villa Albani.
