Philip Angelides: A Political Journey
Early Life and EducationPhilip Nicholas Angelides was born on June 11, 1953, in Sacramento, California to Greek-American parents. He graduated from Thacher School in Ojai, California in 1970. In 1974, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from Harvard University.
Early Political Career
Angelides became involved in Democratic politics in 1971. From 1975 to 1983, he worked for the California state government, focusing on housing, urban planning, and budgeting.
Private Sector Experience
In 1984, Angelides entered the private sector, specializing in affordable housing development. He led AKT Development Corp. and later founded River West, an investment and management company that developed the Laguna West community in Sacramento.
Return to Politics
Angelides returned to politics in 1991 as chairman of the California Democratic Party. He ran unsuccessfully for California State Treasurer in 1994. From 1995 to 1996, he co-chaired Sacramento's Mayor's Commission on Education and Urban Development and then led a bipartisan citizens' committee on Sacramento's school district.
California State Treasurer
In 1998, Angelides won the election for California State Treasurer and took office in 1999. He was re-elected in 2002.
Gubernatorial Campaign
In 2006, Angelides faced off against State Controller Steve Westly for the Democratic nomination for governor. He ultimately ran against incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger, utilizing a strategy of negative campaigning. However, Schwarzenegger ultimately secured a decisive victory in the November 7, 2006 gubernatorial election.
