Early Life and Political Career

Giovanni Goria was an Italian politician and statesman who served as Prime Minister of Italy from July 28, 1987, to April 13, 1988. Born in 1943, he became a member of the Christian Democratic Party of Italy in 1960 and was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1976.

Political Positions and Accomplishments

Goria held various ministerial positions, including Deputy Minister of Budget from 1981 to 1983 and Minister of Finance thereafter. During his tenure as Minister of Finance, he gained popularity for his calm demeanor and skillful television appearances.

In July 1987, Goria formed and led his own cabinet, which lasted less than a year. Despite his brief premiership, he left a mark on Italian politics. He served as Minister of Agriculture in Giulio Andreotti's government and later as Minister of Finance in Giuliano Amato's cabinet.

Corruption Scandal and Resignation

However, Goria's career was marred by a major corruption scandal in 1993 that implicated key figures in the Christian Democratic Party. He resigned from his ministerial position in the wake of the scandal.

Later Career and Death

Following his resignation, Goria was elected to the European Parliament in 1989. He passed away on May 21, 1994, in his hometown of Asti, before the corruption investigation was concluded.
