Phillip Daems: A Belgian Defender's Journey
Early Career and Debut in BelgiumPhillip Daems, a Belgian defender, began his footballing career at the tender age of 11 with the Werbroudering Geel youth academy. In 1998, he signed his first professional contract with Lierse SK, where he established himself as a regular player, making 83 appearances and scoring three goals over three seasons.
Move to Turkey and National Team Recognition
Seeking a change of scenery, Daems joined Turkish club Gençlerbirliği in 2001, where he spent four seasons. His impressive performances caught the attention of the Belgian national team, and he made his debut in 2004.
Joining Borussia Mönchengladbach
In January 2005, Daems signed a three-year deal with Borussia Mönchengladbach, who paid €300,000 for his services. He made his Bundesliga debut in a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on January 29, 2005. The Belgian defender went on to make 11 appearances in his first season.
Injuries and Redemption
Daems' second season with Mönchengladbach began promisingly, with 22 appearances in the league. However, his third season was plagued by injuries. After undergoing surgery on his injured heel bone in October 2006, he initially made a recovery but continued to experience pain. He underwent a second surgery in February 2007 and missed the entire season.
During the 2007/08 season, which Mönchengladbach spent in the second Bundesliga, Daems emerged as a key player, showcasing his defensive abilities.
Captaincy and Knee Injury
In January 2009, Daems was named captain of Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, he suffered a knee injury during the preseason training and missed the first half of the 2009/10 season.
International Career and Personal Life
Daems debuted for the Belgian national team in a friendly match against Germany in 2004. He has made seven appearances for his country since then.
Despite playing in Germany, Daems continues to live in his native Belgium. Despite being provided with an apartment by Borussia Mönchengladbach, he has commuted 140 kilometers each way for the past five years.
