Sébastien Bassong: A Versatile Cameroonian Defender
Sébastien Bassong is a Cameroonian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Norwich City in the English Championship. He has been capped at international level for Cameroon and has played for several notable clubs throughout his career.
Early Career and Metz
Born in Paris, France, Bassong graduated from the renowned Clairefontaine academy, a breeding ground for top French talents. In 2005, he signed his first professional contract with FC Metz. He spent three seasons with the club, becoming a regular in their starting lineup.
Newcastle United
In July 2008, Bassong joined Newcastle United on trial. After impressing in a preseason friendly, he completed a permanent move from Metz later that month. He made his debut for Newcastle in the Football League Cup against Coventry City on August 26.
In his first season in the Premier League, Bassong made 30 appearances but failed to score. Despite Newcastle's disappointing 18th-place finish and relegation, Bassong emerged as a key figure and was voted the club's Player of the Season for 2008/09.
Tottenham Hotspur
After Newcastle's relegation, Bassong expressed his desire to leave the club. He was linked with several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur. On August 6, 2009, he completed a transfer to Tottenham for a fee believed to be around £8 million.
Bassong made his Tottenham debut against Liverpool in the opening match of the 2009/10 Premier League season. He scored his first goal for the club in the same match, heading in a free kick from Luka Modrić. He played regularly for Tottenham, forming a strong partnership with Michael Dawson.
Norwich City
Bassong joined Norwich City in August 2012, signing a three-year contract with the Championship side. He continued to showcase his defensive prowess and helped Norwich establish themselves as a competitive club in the second tier of English football.
International Career
Bassong initially represented France at youth level, playing two friendly matches for the under-21 team. However, he switched his allegiance to Cameroon in 2009, eligible through his parents. He made his debut for the Indomitable Lions in a friendly against Austria on August 12, 2009.
