Early Life and Military Career
Leonid Ivanovich Sevryukov was born on April 2, 1922, in Stavropol, Russia, to a working-class family. In 1940, he joined the Soviet Navy and enrolled in the Yeisk Naval Aviation School for Marine Pilots, graduating in 1941.
Heroic Service in World War II
Sevryukov first saw combat in World War II in 1941, flying with the 7th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 62nd Fighter Aviation Brigade under the Black Sea Fleet Air Force. As a sergeant, he completed 151 combat missions, destroying four enemy aircraft.
Defense of Novorossiysk
On April 28, 1942, during the defense of Novorossiysk, Sevryukov engaged in a fierce aerial battle against 33 German bombers. He downed the lead bomber with his first attack, sending it crashing to the ground.
Taran and Sacrifice
Despite sustaining significant damage to his MiG-3 fighter, Sevryukov continued to fight. When his ammunition was depleted, he resorted to a desperate maneuver: a ramming attack against a Junkers bomber. He successfully severed the enemy aircraft's tail, destroying it but sacrificing his own life in the process.
Recognition and Legacy
For his bravery and sacrifice, Leonid Sevryukov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on October 23, 1942. A street in his hometown of Stavropol was named after him, and a bust in his honor was erected. Sevryukov's remains were interred in his hometown.
