Biography of Finn E. Kydland
Finn E. Kydland, a Norwegian economist, was born on December 1, 1943, in Ålgård, Norway. He grew up on a family farm in Søyland, Gjesdal, a municipality in the agricultural region of Rogaland, southwest of Norway. Kydland was the eldest of six siblings and was raised with liberal values by his parents without imposing any limitations on them.
During his youth, Kydland developed an interest in mathematics and economics after working on accounting tasks at his friend's fur farming. This newfound interest led him to pursue a Bachelor's degree from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in 1968. In 1973, he completed his doctoral dissertation on decentralized macroeconomic planning at Carnegie Mellon University.
After obtaining his Ph.D., Kydland returned to the Norwegian School of Economics as a faculty member. However, in the late 1970s, he received an invitation to work at Carnegie Mellon University, where he has been living in the United States ever since.
Contributions and Career
Finn E. Kydland is a renowned expert in the field of economics, particularly in macroeconomics and political economy. His teaching and research interests revolve around business cycles, tax and budget policies, and labor economics.
In 1977, Kydland joined the faculty of the economics department at Carnegie Mellon University and held the position of a professor until 2004. In that same year, he became a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and founded the Laboratory for Aggregate Economics and Finance (LAEF) within the institution.
In addition to his academic roles, Kydland has served as a consultant for the Federal Reserve Banks of Dallas, Cleveland, and St. Louis. He is also a senior research fellow at the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. Throughout his career, Kydland has been invited to work as a visiting scholar and professor in various organizations, ranging from the Hoover Institution to the Torcuato di Tella University Business School in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Personal Life
In 1968, Kydland married Liv Kjellevold, with whom he raised four children, two sons, and two daughters. He is currently married to Tonya Schooler.
