Early Life and Education
Fiorentino Angelini was born in Rome on August 1, 1916. He studied at the Pontifical Roman Seminary, the Pontifical Lateran University, and the Marianum Pontifical Theological Faculty.
Priestly Ordination and Pastoral Work
On February 3, 1940, Angelini was ordained a priest in Rome. He served as a pastor in Rome from 1940 to 1956, and was chaplain of Azione Cattolica from 1945 to 1959.
Papal Ober-Ceremonier and Titular Bishop
In 1947, Angelini was appointed Papal Ober-Ceremonier, a position he held until 1954. On June 27, 1956, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Messene by Pope Pius XII.
Auxiliary Bishop of Rome and Founder of Association
On January 6, 1977, Pope Paul VI named Angelini Auxiliary Bishop of Rome. In 1959, he founded the Association of Italian Catholic Doctors and served as its chaplain.
Pontifical Commission and Pastoral Care
On February 16, 1985, Pope John Paul II appointed Angelini the first Chairman of the newly established Pontifical Commission for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers.
Cardinal and Retirement
On June 28, 1991, Angelini was elevated to the rank of Cardinal Deacon by Pope John Paul II. He lost the right to participate in the conclave on August 1, 1996, due to reaching the age of eighty. Angelini retired as President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers on December 31, 1996.
Advocate for Beatification and Canonization
Angelini was a lifelong admirer of Pope Pius XII. He called for the opening of the beatification cause for French geneticist Jérôme Lejeune and was an advocate for the canonization of Pius XII.
Legacy and Film
Angelini was friends with Italian statesman Giulio Andreotti, who was portrayed in the 2008 film "Il Divo". The film features a character based on Cardinal Angelini.
