Early Life and Education

Fofi Gennimata was born in Athens, Greece into a political family. Her father, Georgios Gennimatas, was a prominent politician in the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). She graduated in 1987 with a degree in Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Athens. During her university years, she was an active member of the socialist student union.

Early Political Career

Fofi Gennimata began her political career in 2001 when she joined the Central Committee of PASOK. From 2003 to 2009, she was a member of the party's Executive Bureau and Political Council. In 2002 and 2006, she was elected as President of the Athens and Piraeus super-prefectures. However, she was barred from running as a PASOK candidate in the 2007 elections due to a constitutional provision prohibiting local government officials from seeking parliamentary seats.

Government Service

In 2009, Gennimata was appointed Deputy Minister of Health and Social Solidarity in the government of George Papandreou. She later served as Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs from 2010 to 2011. In 2012, she became the Press Secretary of PASOK.

Leadership of PASOK

In 2015, Gennimata was elected President of PASOK at the party's 10th conference. She won the election with 51% of the votes, defeating Odysseas Konstantinopoulos and Andreas Loverdos. Under her leadership, PASOK became a key player in the formation of the Syriza-led government.
