Early Career and Struggles
Riyad Mahrez's football journey began at the age of 18 when he joined Troyes in France. However, he initially played for their second team in the lower divisions. Despite his unwavering determination, Mahrez failed to make a breakthrough at Martigues and contemplated abandoning football for a career in the police force.
Professional Contract and Rise Through the Ranks
In 2004, Mahrez signed his first professional contract with Cannes, a third division club. Over three seasons, he featured in 77 matches for them. In 2007, he moved to Amiens in the second division, where he quickly became a regular starter, playing 67 games in two seasons.
Breakthrough in Ligue 1
In 2009, Mahrez's career took a significant turn when he joined Ligue 1 club Valenciennes. During the first half of the 2012/13 season, he emerged as one of the league's top performers, contributing to 10 goals (6 goals and 4 assists) in just 18 appearances.
Move to Marseille and Further Success
In January 2013, Mahrez signed for Marseille for a fee of €500,000. After a half-season with Marseille, he spent time on loan at Rennes and then Real Betis.
International Career
Mahrez represented Algeria at the under-20 level in a training camp in France. In 2010, he was included in the preliminary and final squads for Algeria's World Cup team. He made his international debut in a friendly match against Ireland and scored his first goal for Algeria in a match against Central Africa. Mahrez participated in the 2010 World Cup and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, playing in all three matches each time.
