Biography of Franz Perkhorovich
Franz Perkhorovich, a Hero of the Soviet Union and a Lieutenant General, was born on May 15, 1894, in the village of Zalazy in the Dokshitsky District of the Vitebsk Region in Belarus. He began his military service in 1915 and joined the Red Army in 1918. Perkhorovich graduated from the Officer Training School in 1916, completed one course at the M.V. Frunze Military Academy in 1932, and attended the "Vystryel" courses in 1941.
Participation in World War I and the Civil War
During World War I, Perkhorovich served as a Second Lieutenant. In the years of the Civil War, he worked as a regimental adjutant and assistant chief of staff of a brigade, participating in battles against the Polish army, Petlyura's forces, and Bulak-Balakhovich's troops. After the war, he commanded a company and became the Chief of Staff of a rifle regiment in 1923. In 1926, he became an assistant and later Deputy Chief of the department in the Military Council of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. From November 1937, he served as the military leader of the Moscow Planning Institute and, from December 1939, as a lecturer in combat training at the military faculty of the State Central Institute of Physical Culture.
Role in the Great Patriotic War
With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, Perkhorovich served in the active army. He fought on the Western, Voronezh, 1st Ukrainian, and 1st Belarusian fronts. He commanded a rifle regiment and, from July 1941, served as the Deputy Commander of the 107th Rifle Division (later renamed the 5th Guards Rifle Division). In May 1942, he became the commander of the 100th Rifle Division, and in June 1943, he commanded the 52nd Rifle Corps. From May 1944 until the end of the war, he led the 3rd Guards Rifle Corps, and from November 1944, he commanded the 47th Army.
Perkhorovich participated in the defense of Moscow, battles on the Voronezh and Valuysko-Rossohansk directions, the liberation of Ukraine, and the Lublin-Brest, Warsaw-Poznan, East Pomeranian, and Berlin offensive operations. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his skillful command of the army during the Warsaw-Poznan operation, which resulted in the liberation of Warsaw. After the war, he commanded the 28th Army. From April 1947 to July 1951, he served as the Chief of the All-Army Education Department of the General Staff of the Ground Forces.
Perkhorovich was decorated with three Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, Orders of Suvorov I and II degrees, the Order of Kutuzov I degree, medals, and foreign orders.
