Biography of Frances Eliza Burnett

Francis Eliza Hodgson was born on November 24, 1849 in Manchester, England. After her father's death in 1865, the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. After her mother's death, 18-year-old Frances became the head of the family and took on the responsibility of raising her four younger brothers. In 1873, she married Dr. Swan Burnett and took his surname.

Literary Success

In 1886, Frances Eliza Burnett published one of her most famous novels, "Little Lord Fauntleroy". The book went on to have more than 20 editions. However, her marriage with Dr. Burnett ended in divorce in 1898. In 1900, she entered into a second marriage, this time with her business partner, Stephen Townsend. Unfortunately, this marriage lasted less than two years and they divorced in 1902.

Later Life and Legacy

From the mid-1890s, Frances Eliza primarily lived in England. In 1905, she obtained American citizenship and in 1909, she permanently moved back to the United States. Frances Eliza Burnett passed away in New York and was buried in Roslin Cemetery, next to the grave of her son Vivian. At the foot of the grave stands a life-sized monument of her son Lionel.
