Biography of Francesco Albani
Francesco Albani (1578 – 1660) was an Italian painter of the Bolognese school. He was born in Bologna on March 17, 1578, and passed away there on October 4, 1660. Albani studied under the Dutch artist Calvaert, and later under Carracci. During his youth, he was close friends and classmates with Guido Reni, until rivalry and competition drove them apart, turning them into enemies.
Artistic Achievements
Albani painted over 50 exceptional altarpieces, which were considered worthy of the Carracci school. However, he had a particular love for depicting idyllic scenes from ancient myths, which formed a significant portion of his body of work.
Family Life
Albani had 12 children with his second wife, who were all remarkably beautiful. He often found inspiration for his representations of Venus, Galatea, and other mythological figures in the faces of his own children. This, however, caused a certain uniformity in the features of his figures.
