Father Francisco Manuel Blanco: A Spanish Monk and Botanist

Father Francisco Manuel Blanco was a Spanish monk and botanist. He dedicated his life to the study of Philippine flora, and his work has greatly contributed to the scientific understanding of the region's plant life.

Blanco's Flora de Filipinas

Blanco's most notable work is his "Flora de Filipinas," which was published in 1837. This comprehensive study of Philippine flora included descriptions, classifications, and illustrations of over 1,200 species. Unfortunately, the first two editions (1837 and 1845) were not illustrated.

Posthumous Publication and Recognition

After Blanco's death in 1877, Celestino Fernández Villar published an illustrated edition of "Flora de Filipinas" between 1877 and 1883. This edition featured over 450 color plates drawn by Blanco himself.

In recognition of Blanco's significant contributions to botany, English botanist John Lindley named a genus of plants after him. The genus "Blancoa" belongs to the Haemodoraceae family.
