Francisco Istúriz was a prominent Spanish statesman who served as Prime Minister of Spain.
Early Career
Istúriz emerged as a representative of the Exaltados, a radical faction within the Spanish government. In 1820, after the Liberal Revolution, he became a deputy and in 1823, he was elected President of the Cortes. During this time, he advocated for the abdication of King Ferdinand VII.
Exile and Return
When the old order was restored, Istúriz was sentenced to death. However, he escaped to London. He later returned to Spain during the regency of Queen Maria Cristina.
Prime Minister and Political Leadership
In 1836, Istúriz became the Prime Minister of Spain. His government was short-lived, as it was overthrown by a rebellion that forced the Queen to accept the liberal Constitution of 1812.
Later Career
Despite his setbacks, Istúriz continued to hold important positions in Spanish politics. He served as President of the Cortes several times, as well as a diplomat in London and Paris. In 1856, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to St. Petersburg.
