Norman Lamont, Lord Lamont of Lerwick

Early Life and Parliamentary Career

Norman Lamont was born in 1942 in the Shetland Islands, north of Scotland. From 1972 to 1997, he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons. In 1998, he was elevated to the House of Lords.

Government Service

Lamont held various cabinet positions under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Under Prime Minister John Major, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1990 to 1993. During his tenure, Lamont oversaw the introduction of the poll tax, a deeply unpopular measure that ultimately contributed to the Conservative Party's electoral defeat in 1997.

Later Career

Following his departure from government, Lamont held a number of non-executive directorships and wrote several books on financial and political topics. He remains an influential voice in British politics and economics, frequently appearing as a commentator in the media.
