Biography of Francisco José Viñas

Francisco José Viñas was born on December 28, 1946, in Seville, Spain. However, in 1948, his parents immigrated from post-war Europe to Paraguay. The family later settled in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1950. During their time in Paraguay, Viñas' parents were baptized in the local Mormon church.

Viñas worked as a chemist for the pharmaceutical company Bayer AG and also served as the director of the Institute of Religion in Uruguay for the LDS Church's Church Educational System. Eventually, he became the head of all educational institutions of the church in the country. He was also involved in the financial department of the Mormon church in Uruguay.

Before joining the General Authorities, Viñas served as a bishop, a stake president (an administrative territorial unit with a population of about 500 to 1,000 people, similar to a diocese), three times as a regional representative of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and as a member of the Seventy's Quorum. He also served as the mission president in Argentina for three years.

In 1996, Viñas became a member of the Second Quorum of Seventy and was transferred to the First Quorum of Seventy in 1998. In August 2008, he served as the first counselor of the Western European region of the church, before being assigned to the Caribbean Area as the first counselor, with Daniel L. Johnson as the president and Miguel A. Lee as the second counselor.

In May 2009, regional organizations were reorganized, and Viñas became the president of the Caribbean region, with Gary J. Coleman as the first counselor and Wilford W. Andersen as the second counselor. These changes took effect on August 1, 2009.
