Lukerya Kalmykova: A Charismatic Visionary in the Doukhobor Movement

Early Life and Family

Lukerya Kalmykova was born into a family of devout Doukhobors in 1840. Her family relocated to Georgia when she was just a year old, where they settled in the village of Goreloy.

Marriage and Loss

At the age of 16, Lukerya's hand was sought by Peter Kalmykov, the young leader of the Doukhobors. They enjoyed a brief marriage, but Peter's untimely demise seven years later left Lukerya widowed.

Leadership and Prosperity

In 1864, following her husband's death, Kalmykova became the leader of the Doukhobors. During her 22-year reign, the sect experienced significant growth and prosperity. She tirelessly visited villages, providing aid to the needy and fostering economic development. Lukerya had a particular interest in horse breeding, which became a lucrative trade for the Doukhobors. Additionally, she cultivated a favorable image of the group with the government by managing postal and transportation services in Doukhobor regions.

Controversial Measures

Kalmykova's leadership was not without its controversies. She implemented corporal punishment for unruly members of the community and adopted an unorthodox approach to combatting drunkenness: forcing intoxicated individuals to parade naked through the village.

Wartime Contributions

During the Russo-Turkish War, Kalmykova negotiated with Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich to exempt Doukhobor conscripts from combat duties. Instead, they provided essential support services such as transporting provisions and establishing field hospitals.

Love and Respect

Despite her authoritarian tendencies, Lukerya Kalmykova gained the genuine affection of the Doukhobor community, who affectionately referred to her as "Lushechka" or "Blessed Lushechka."

Prophetic Visions

Kalmykova is also remembered for her prophecies regarding the future exodus of Doukhobors from Russia and divisions within the movement. Her words continue to resonate with Doukhobors today.
