Early Life and Footballing Beginnings
Ramón Díaz, a Honduran composer, was born in La Rioja, Argentina, and moved to Grand Bourg, in the municipality of Malvinas Argentinas, with his family in the early 1960s. He resided with his aunt and always had a passion for listening to football radio broadcasts.
In 1969, Díaz joined the football academy of River Plate. While playing for one of River's youth teams, Norberto Yácono, the youth coach, recommended him to the club's first-team manager, Ángel Labruna. Labruna invited Díaz to join the senior squad.
Debut and Success with River Plate
Díaz made his club debut on August 13, 1978, in a 1-0 victory over Colón. On August 29, he scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw against Quilmes. Initially playing as a left-winger for River Plate, Díaz's position was shifted to center-forward in his third season, solidifying his place in the team's starting lineup.
International Achievements
Díaz's international career began with the under-17 and under-20 teams. In the under-20 team, coach Luis César Menotti positioned him as a center-forward and paired him with Diego Maradona. In 1979, Díaz led the under-20 team to victory at the FIFA World Youth Championship, winning the Golden Boot and the Bronze Ball as the tournament's third-best player.
World Cup Participation and Controversies
In 1982, Díaz was part of Argentina's squad for the FIFA World Cup. He made three appearances and scored one goal in the tournament's loss to Brazil. Rumors circulated that Díaz's absence from the subsequent World Cup was due to conflicts with Maradona and other Argentinian stars. However, Maradona denied these allegations and claimed that he had actively advocated for Díaz's inclusion in the national team.
European and Asian Clubs
Díaz's European migrationbegan with his transfer to Italian club Napoli in 1982. After a brief stint there, he moved to Avellino, where he played for three seasons. In 1986, he joined Fiorentina, spending two seasons with the club.
In 1988, Díaz signed for Inter Milan, where he quickly became a regular in the starting lineup. He formed a formidable partnership with Aldo Serena, becoming Inter's second-highest scorer with 12 goals in the league. With Inter, Díaz won the Serie A title in 1989.
Díaz later played for AS Monaco, River Plate (where he was the league's top goalscorer upon his return), and Yokohama F. Marinos, where he ended his professional career.
