Italian Musicologist and ComposerLuigi Ferdinando Tagliavini (1900-1957) was an Italian musicologist and composer who specialized in early Italian music. His notable contributions include editing and publishing operas by Claudio Monteverdi, Niccolò Piccinni, and others.
Contributions to Music Scholarship
Tagliavini's significant publication, "Andrea e Giovanni Gabrieli e la musica strumentale in S. Marco" (1931), explored instrumental music in St. Mark's Cathedral. He also founded the publishing series "I Classici Musicali Italiani" (Italian Musical Classics) in 1939, which showcased Italian musical works.
Teaching and Legacy
Tagliavini served as a professor, mentoring students such as Guido Agosti. His extensive library was acquired by the Milan Conservatory in 1950. Despite his promising career, Tagliavini's plans were hindered by the outbreak of World War II. The publishing series halted at the 14th volume after his untimely demise.
