Early Life and Naval Career

Jean-Baptiste Bouvet de Précourt was a French admiral who fought in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Born into a seafaring family, Bouvet began sailing on merchant ships at an early age. In 1779, he joined the French Royal Navy as a midshipman.

Revolutionary Wars

During the Revolutionary Wars, Bouvet served on the frigate Ajax under the command of Admiral Suffren. He distinguished himself in battles off Sadras and Providien in 1782. He also took part in the combat at Cuddalore and the siege of Trincomalee, where he led a landing operation.

Napoleonic Wars

In 1793, Bouvet was promoted to rear admiral. In the battles off Brest on May 31 and June 1, 1794, he commanded the ship Le Terrible and inflicted severe damage on three British vessels. Despite being damaged and towed back to Brest, Bouvet's actions earned him accolades.

Irish Expedition and Dismissal

Bouvet's reputation suffered after the Irish expedition of 1796. As commander of the fleet, he exhibited indecision and poor strategic judgment. The failure of the expedition led to Bouvet's dismissal and loss of rank.

Restoration and Caribbean Service

Five years later, Napoleon Bonaparte restored Bouvet's position and rank. He was appointed to command a squadron destined for Guadeloupe with a landing force of 3,500 troops. Bouvet successfully executed this mission, landing the troops and providing naval support during the battle against coastal defenses.
