Early Life and Military Career
Canadian composer and conductor Joseph Vézina was born into a musical family in 1849. Inspired by his father's love for music, Vézina received informal training from renowned composer Calixa Lavallée. In 1867, he enlisted in the Quebec Voltigeurs as a trumpeter and later played the baritone.
Leadership and Orchestral Success
Vézina's musical prowess earned him the leadership of the military band in 1868. He held this position until 1879, during which time he composed numerous marches and dance pieces. In 1880, Vézina's band premiered Lavallée's "O Canada" anthem, which later became Canada's national song.
Founding of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra
In 1902, Vézina's vision materialized as he founded the Quebec Symphony Orchestra. He served as its conductor until his passing. In 1922, he became a co-founder of the music department at Université Laval.
Opera and Musical Legacy
Vézina's musical output extended beyond orchestral arrangements. He composed three comic operas: "Le Laur?at" (1906), "Le Rajah" (1910), and "Le F?tiche" (1912). His operatic works showcased his flair for melody and humor.
