François Viète, a remarkable French mathematician, is known as the founder of algebra as a science of transforming expressions and solving equations in general form. He was the creator of symbolic algebra and was the first to use letters to represent not only unknowns but also known quantities. This allowed him to introduce the concept of mathematical formulas and make significant contributions to the development of algebra.
Early Life and Education:
François Viète was born in 1540 in Fontenay-le-Comte, a small town in the south of France. He grew up in a prominent Huguenot family, although he himself remained a Catholic. Following in his father's footsteps, Viète initially pursued a career in law and studied at the University of Poitiers. It was during this time that he developed an interest in mathematics while teaching the daughter of a noble Huguenot family.
Career and Contributions:
After the young girl he taught grew up and got married, Viète moved with her to Paris in order to further his mathematical studies and learn about the achievements of leading European mathematicians. He had personal interactions with notable scholars such as Ramus and Bombelli. In 1571, Viète began his career in public service, becoming an advisor to the French Parliament and later to King Henry III.
During his time in Paris, Viète made significant advancements in mathematics. He deciphered a complex code used in intercepted correspondence between the King of Spain and his representatives in the Netherlands, providing valuable intelligence to the French king. Viète's ability to work tirelessly for long hours without sleep became well-known among his contemporaries.
Viète's most important contribution to mathematics was his development of symbolic algebra, which allowed for the manipulation of symbols to solve equations in a general manner. He introduced new notations, such as the use of parentheses and the symbols "+" and "-", to represent mathematical operations. Viète also formulated the famous Viète's theorem, which establishes the relationship between the coefficients of a polynomial equation and its roots.
Later Years and Legacy:
In the late 1580s, Viète left his position in public service but continued to pursue his mathematical interests. He engaged in debates regarding the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in Europe and even attempted to create his own calendar. Viète's works were published posthumously, with his most comprehensive collection of mathematical treatises being published in 1646 by the Dutch mathematician van Schooten under the title "Mathematical Works of Viète."
François Viète passed away in 1603 at the age of 60. He left behind a profound impact on mathematics, particularly in the fields of algebra and trigonometry.
