Frankie Corio, a Rising Star in the Film Industry

Early Life and Childhood

Francesca Corio was born in 2010 in Livingston, Scotland. Nicknamed Frankie, she grew up with her older sister Mariella and younger brother Lorenzo. Frankie's father's name is also Frank. While she had performed in school Christmas plays, Frankie had no aspirations of becoming an actress.

Breakthrough with "Aftersun"

Frankie's film career began during the COVID-19 lockdown. Her mother, Leonie, discovered a casting call for a 10-12-year-old tomboy in the upcoming drama "Aftersun" and sent in a photo of Frankie without any expectations. After submitting a video of Frankie whispering and climbing a tree, she was invited for a screen test and ultimately cast in the role. Frankie beat out 800 other candidates for one of the leading roles.

Preparation and Filming

To build a strong on-screen chemistry with her father, Frankie spent two weeks with actor Paul Mescal, who played the role of Calum. They swam in the sea, ate ice cream, waffles, and pancakes, and played pool. Frankie described Mescal as "lovely" and "a bit of a goofball" in person. Filming took place in Turkey in the summer of 2021, with Frankie's entire family on hand. Her parents took turns supervising her on set, giving her space to fully immerse herself in the role.

Unique Approach to Acting

Frankie approached the filming process like a game, simply delivering the lines as instructed. With no formal acting training, she took inspiration from her favorite actress, Millie Bobby Brown, in "Stranger Things." Director Charlotte Wells encouraged Frankie to avoid reading the full script, resulting in extensive improvisation and a portrayal of her character marked by hyperactivity, mischief, and humor.

Debut on the Festival Circuit and Awards Season

"Aftersun" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, marking Frankie's first red carpet appearance. She subsequently attended screenings in the US and Scotland with friends. Her performance earned her numerous nominations and awards, including praise from Kate Blanchett, Florence Pugh, and Michelle Yeoh. Frankie's biggest challenge was creating an autograph that she would have to sign for the rest of her life.

Future Aspiration and Second Project

Frankie's second film is the thriller "Bagman," starring Sam Claflin. She aspires to star in a project with a large cast of children or teenagers, like "Stranger Things." Frankie is determined to pursue acting as a profession, finding joy in portraying characters different from herself.
