François Hanriot: The Jacobin Commander of the French Revolution
Humble Beginnings and Revolutionary PathFrançois Hanriot began his life as a modest customs official. However, his destiny would be intertwined with the tumultuous events of the French Revolution. His unwavering loyalty to the Jacobin faction propelled him to prominence during the uprising of August 10, 1792, where he emerged as the commander of the Sans-Culottes battalion.
Rise to Power and the Role in the Revolution
Hanriot's leadership during the uprising of May 31, 1793, was pivotal. He was appointed to lead the National Guard and, on June 2nd, surrounded the Convention with a massive force, pressuring them to arrest 29 Girondinist leaders under the threat of artillery bombardment. Throughout the revolution, Hanriot remained an ardent supporter of Maximilien Robespierre.
Loyal to the End
When Robespierre was arrested on 9 Thermidor (July 27), 1794, Hanriot rallied his forces for a desperate uprising. However, his efforts were unsuccessful, and he was captured. On July 28th, Hanriot was executed alongside Robespierre and his associates, signifying the end of the Reign of Terror and the Jacobin movement.
